Senior Brothers and Retirement
We must never forget those dedicated men, who, faithful to their religious vows and committed to the education and formation of the youth entrusted to them, have persevered through many years. Long past normal retirement age, they continue to work as much as their age and health allow. Certainly, prayers, the example of their daily lives, and sometimes their suffering from illness and infirmities constitute an apostolate of incalculable value to the Church and to teach each one of us. What better way to say THANK YOU than to provide for their housing, nursing care and general well bring in their seniors years?
San Miguel Schools
In the spirit of St. La Salle’s concern for at-risk youth, the Brothers returned to the middle school concept in 1997. The first San Miguel School opened in Camden, NJ in that year, followed by San Miguel School, Washington, DC in 2002 and La Salle Academy, North Philadelphia in 2003. These schools, which are a beacon of hope in their local communities, provide their students with the skills for high school at a minimal cost to their parents. Additional funding for operating expenses comes from the Province and other outside sources.
Overseas Missions
Christian Brothers from the Baltimore Province have established schools in some of the poorest third world countries and the Holy Land to bring the Good News of the Gospel to future leaders. However, the expense of their formation and education is costly. Christ said, “Whatever you do for the least of these my brethren, you do unto me.” Currently, the Brothers are serving in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Bethlehem, Guatemala and the Philippines.
Vocations and Colleague Formation
The legacy of St. John Baptist de La Salle is his spirituality. We discover this in the story of his life, in his writings, in the 300-year old history of his Institute, and in the lives of his Brothers, both past and present. He developed spirituality for Brothers and colleagues who are committed to the ministry of education. The cost of formation for young men aspiring to become Christian brothers as well as the formation of colleagues is considerable. However, what greater gifts than this…to help young men and women who are willing and eager to share in the Mission either as Brothers or colleagues.
Christian Brothers Spiritual Center
In August 2003, the Baltimore Province adopted an ambitious five-year strategic plan. One of the most unique and exciting new programs to come out of the Strategic Plan is the development of a young adult ministry center. This new center opened in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, a very popular neighborhood for young adults. The center has become a gathering place for young men and women for spiritual development, faith formation and leadership development. The target age range is 22-35, but programs for college students are also offered.
